J. W. Smith Elementary School

Drawing - Teacher

Hello! My name is Betty Tripp. I believe... "All students can learn and achieve when given the appropriate tools and confidence." I love to teach, and watch children grow and achieve. I have been in education for approximately 25 years. After serving as a teacher assistant for 11 years of those years, I enrolled in Craven Community College and East Carolina University to earn my teaching degree. I also received National Board Certification in Elementary Education in 2005. The past 14 years I have taught third grade at James W. Smith.

I was born and raised in Craven County and continue to live here with my husband and Yorkshire Terrier, George. I have two children, and 2 wonderful grandsons. I enjoy spending time with my family, playing with my grandsons, going to church, and using my talents for the Lord.

Photography, drawing and painting are some of my hobbies.

I am excited about this school year and look forward to a successful year with your child.
Welcome to Mrs. Tripp's 3rd Grade Class!

School and Class News

* Weekly Tests: Thursday - Daily Geography
Friday - Spelling Test

* Please make sure your child is reading to someone at home each night about 20 minutes. This is part of assigned homework.

* Students should be memorizing
multiplication and measurement facts. Testing on these facts begins the first of September and continues throughout the year. Memorization of these facts is important for your child to be successful on the End of Grade test and at the next grade level.

Boxes of Tissues throughout the year
Clorox Wipes
Hand Sanitizer
ziploc bags (snack size, quart, and gallon)

Please make sure your child has pencils and paper daily.

Spelling:
Monday's we have a Spelling pretest. The words a student misses are the words he/she uses to do his/her homework throughout the week.
Monday: Write a statement with missed word.
Tuesday: Write each word 5 times each in cursive.
Wednesday: Use each word in a sentence that asks a question.
Thursday: Write each word in a triangle formation: Ex. toe =
t
to
toe
Friday: Test on all words - CORRECT FORMATION OF LETTERS DOES COUNT WHEN GRADING SPELLING.

Those students who make a 100 on the pretest must write a focused story or paragraph using 5 spelling words of their choice. This assignment has to be turned in on Friday.

Math: Usually everynight

Measurement and Multiplication: usually every night. Students have to write the missed facts a specified number of times.
