Roger Bell Elem. K-5 Entrance Expectations

The lists below are the academic and developmental expectations which are expected of students at the beginning of each grade level. The teachers in our school have worked on these expectations so that parents will know what basic skills students will need at the beginning of each grade level. This way, parents can assist students in learning these skills prior to beginning each grade.
Prior to Beginning Kindergarten
Life Skills
1. Work zippers on pants, jackets and other pieces of clothing.
2. Locking restroom doors when using the restroom
3. Washing hands/hygiene
4. Tie shoes
5. Blowing and wiping own nose.
Social Skills
1. Walk in line with class/other students.
2. Sit in classroom chair with feet on the floor and back against the chair.
3. Sit correctly at a table to eat meals.
4. Proper use of utensils (forks, napkins, and appropriate table manners)
5. Students should know how to take turns on certain tasks.
6. Sharing with others
7. Raise hand to be recognized
8. Respecting others space by keeping hands, feet and objects to oneself.
9. Waiting one’s turn when others are talking.
Academic Skills
1. Student knows his or her first and last name
2. Student can read and write his or her first and last name.
3. Student can identify basic colors
4. Student can identify basic shapes.
5. Student can count to ten.
6. Student can say his or her ABC’s.

• Your child’s kindergarten teacher will provide you with a list of Fall and Spring expectations for Reading, Mathematical thinking, Story Concepts, and Writing.

Prior to Beginning First Grade
Life Skills
1. Wash hands
2. Tie shoes
3. Zip, button, and snap clothes when needed.
4. Demonstrate responsibility (student can take care of and return items such as homework, planners, library books, etc. on time).
5. Students can keep up with their own supplies and take care of them.
Social Skills
1. Respect other’s personal space by keeping hands, feet, and objects to themselves.
2. Walk with class in a line.
3. Sit properly in a chair with feet on the floor.
4. Listen while others are talking and take turns.
5. Sit properly in the cafeteria to eat meals.
6. Share with others
7. Raise hand and wait to be called on to answer.
8. Stay with the class when out of the room.
9. Participate in class activities and discussion.
Academic Skills
Reading Readiness
1. Print first and last name in capital and lower-case letters.
2. Can name capital and lower-case letters when they are presented in random order.
3. Can say the letter when given a sound.
4. Knows short vowel sounds (bag, beg, big, bog, bug)
5. Can print capital and lower-case letters.
6. Can copy from the board.
7. Knows color words.
Math Readiness
1. Can count to 100
2. Can name numbers 0-100 when presented in random order.
3. Knows number words to ten when presented in random order.
4. Can count up to 20 objects without error.
5. Can match numerals or number words to sets from one to ten.
Other Skills
First Grade Sight Words
1. Can say the days and months of the year and can tell the date and month.
2. Knows the four seasons.
3. Knows colors and shapes.
4. Can cut straight and curved lines neatly with scissors and can glue neatly.
5. Can tell their first and last name, telephone number, address, birthday, age.

Prior to Beginning Second Grade
Developmental Expectations
1. Can follow directions having more than one step.
2. Can stay seated and focused on a task for a minimum of 15 minutes.
3. Can independently read and answer questions.
4. Can answer questions in complete sentences by using words from the question (example: What is today? Today is Monday.).
5. Show and explain how they got answers.
6. Complete and return homework daily.
Academic Expectations - Writing
1. Students can write a story with a beginning, middle, and end which makes sense.
2. Students can punctuate their writing with capitals and periods.
3. Students can space and form letters clearly and properly.
Reading
Second Grade Words
1. Students can read and write the First Grade sight words (most commonly used word list found on the school website).
2. Students can read independently for 15 minutes.
3. Students can retell a story they read including the title, setting, characters, and main problem.
Math
1. Students know from memory basic addition and subtraction facts through 12.
2. Students can count and write numbers to 100.
3. Students can use a clock with hands to tell time to the hour and half hour.
4. Students know and can identify basic shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle).
5. Students can recognize names of coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter) and their value.
6. Students can count to 100 by 5’s and 10’s and can count at least to 20 by 2’s.

Prior to Beginning Third Grade
Developmental Expectations
1. Can follow directions having more than one step.
2. Can stay seated and focused on a task for a minimum of 30 minutes.
3. Can read independently and answer questions about what has been read.
4. Can answer questions in complete sentences by using words from the question asked (example: What is today? Today is Monday.).
5. Show answers and explain how they got those answers.
6. Complete and return homework daily.
Academic Expectations - Writing
1. Students can write a story with a beginning, a middle, and an ending which makes sense.
2. Students can punctuate their writing with capitals and periods.
3. Students can print their writing clearly.
Reading
1. Students can write clearly
2. Students can read and write the 212 Dolch words (the list of most commonly used words found on our website).
3. Students can read independently for 30 minutes.
4. Students can retell a story they read.
5. Students can read aloud smoothly with few mistakes.
Math
1. Students know from memory basic addition and subtraction facts through 18.
2. Students can finish work independently with little help
3. Students can show and explain how they got the answers to math problems.
4. Students can use steps to solve word problems.
5. Students can tell time using a clock with hands.
6. Students can use a ruler to measure to the nearest inch.

Prior to Beginning Fourth Grade
Developmental Expectations
1. Students use organizational skills.
2. Students follow multi-step directions.
3. Students can work in groups or with partners.
4. Students can practice self-control around others.
5. Students demonstrate respect for all classmates and adults.
Math Expectations
1. Students understand subtracting zeros.
2. Students can understand number place value up to 10,000.
3. Students understand perimeter as a measurable attribute.
4. Students demonstrate a basic knowledge of fractions and fraction equivalence.
5. Students construct and analyze frequency tables, bar graphs, and picture graphs and line plots.
6. Students describe, analyze, compare and classify two-dimensional shapes, to include lines and angles.
7. Students understand basic multiplication and division and strategies for basic multiplication facts and related division facts.
Writing
1. Students can read and write in cursive.
2. Students copy material from the board or a text book.
3. Students can write a story on topic with a beginning, middle, and an ending.
4. Students understand the rules of basic grammar in order to understand what they read.
5. Students write for a variety of audiences and purposes using appropriate formats.
6. Students understand the characteristics or elements of various genres, or types, of writing.
7. Students can use grammar and language conventions to access and communicate information and ideas.
8. Students write and respond to items in complete sentences with a good command of punctuation and sentence structure.
Reading
1. Students have a developed vocabulary.
2. Students have a strong command of spelling.
3. Students are able to read and comprehend passages of writing.
4. Students can summarize what they read and pick out the main points.
5. Students demonstrate word attack skills to sound out and understand words.
6. Students use context clues in a story to aid in understanding what they read.
7. Students read with fluency and comprehension fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama.

2. Students can display independence in completing and being prepared with assignments for class or homework.
Math
1. Students have mastered all fourth-grade objectives.
Reading
1. Students can read at, or above, grade level.
2. Students can read a variety of various types of literature with a high level of fluency.
3. Students are able to read both fiction and non-fiction chapter books with a high level of fluency.
Writing
1. Students can understand and practice writing for a variety of purposes and audiences.
2. Students can read and write cursive writing.
3. Students will have an appropriate understanding of spelling and grammar skills.
4. Students have mastered all fourth-grade writing objectives.
