Debra Lewis
Biography

I was born in New Jersey and moved with my family to Pennsylvania when I was seven, to a very rural farming area. After high school, I attended Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and earned my degrees in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. A need to repay student loans led me south in search of a job and found one at Grover C. Fields Middle School for the 1994-1995 school year. I spent three years teacher ELA and Social Studies and briefly retired when I had my first child, Jacob. During my ‘retirement’, I had a second child, Sarah and shortly thereafter accepted a teacher position in Pamlico County Schools as a seventh grade, ELA/SS teacher. I had every intention in getting certified to teach Middle School in NC, but was surprised to learn that I was pregnant, again, with Katie. Luckily, a teaching position opened up in sixth grade where I returned the following year teaching ELA. I spent six years teaching in sixth grade, eventually teaching ELA/SS again. It was very difficult to leave Pamlico County, but with the four of us in four different schools in two different counties, I had to make our lives easier and came back to Craven County to teach here, where I hope to remain for many years to come.
