Welcome to Second Grade! My name is Karen Camp. I hold a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and have been teaching for twelve years. I am originally from Massachusetts. I taught 1st grade there for 3 years. My husband and I then moved to California, where I taught 1st and 3rd grade. We have finally settled in New Bern. I am very excited to be working here at Ben D. Quinn!

Welcome to Mrs. Camp's Classroom!

The Second Grade Reading Curriculum focuses on teaching the students to fluently read and comprehend fiction and nonfiction texts, poems, and articles. The students will learn to make connections between texts and their lives and to understand the author's purpose for writing. Students will read and discuss many different types of literature. We will also focus on story comprehension through oral and written retelling of stories. Accelerated Reader supports our Reading Curriculum.

The Second Grade Math Curriculum is centered around several goals and objectives. The students will continue to practice the skills that were introduced in first grade. We will continue working on addition and subtraction facts, graphing, problem solving, patterning, and measurement. In addition, we will be working on some beginning algebra concepts.

Second Graders will grow as writers in Writer's Workshop sessions. We begin our sessions with a mini lesson, which helps to focus the kids for writing. Following the actual writing time, we will have a share time. Then kids will work on writing, revising and publishing their pieces. Some things for Second Graders to keep in mind when writing are: spelling, punctuation, capitalization, using descriptive language, staying on topic, and creating an interesting beginning and an exciting ending.
