B. D. Quinn Elementary School

Bell 13
Remember "If you see something, say something!"
Critical Incident Response Team
Congratulations to BDQ for its 2006 Super Safe School's state wide recognition. Read more about the Department of Public Instrucion's safety initiatives. Ben D. Quinn along with the other 21 Craven County schools received special recognititon on March 2, 2004 from N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper. We received a certificate for successful completion of having a Critical Incident Response drill, with law enforcement on campus, and for completing the Critical Incident Response Kits by December, 2003.
As mandated by the superintendent all exterior doors will be kept locked at all times. After entering the building we ask that all staff, substututes, volunteers, and visitors check-in at the front office. Checking out before leaving the building is also requested. Craven County Schools has provided all staff members and substitutes with picture ID badges. We ask that all volunteers and visitors also wear identification badges or stickers when they are in Ben D. Quinn. All of our staff, substitute teachers and frequent volunteers have been trained in the proper procedures when a school has a Critical Incident Response drill.
We want to be prepared for any thing that may jeopardize the safety of our school, students and staff. Therefore, it is important that all visitors on campus during a Critical Incident Response drill participate fully. If you have any questions or concerns please call the school and speak to Mr. Gatlin and/or Mrs. Samz.

Picking Up Students
Parents will have to present, in writing, to the front office permission for friends, relatives, and/or guardians to pick up students. Also, parents need to notify the front office of the names of people who are not allowed to pick up their child(ren).
If you must pick up your child before the 2:45 dismissal, a note to the teacher stating the time and reason is required. All parents must report to the office when coming to pick up their children and sign the school sign-out register. Students will not be checked out of the office after 2:30 p.m.

Attendance & Early Check-out
It is important for students to attend school each of our 180 days. The following ares some of the valid conditions for excused absences, (complete list can be found in the student handbook and the Student Policies and Regulations Manual on Attendance):
  • Illness of the student
  • Medical or dental appointments when approved by the principal
  • Death in the family
If your child(ren) is absent from school he/she should bring in an excuse no later than the third day he/she returns back to school.
Instruction begins the moment a child enters the school and continues until they leave the building. Please help us teach your child by having them here everyday, for the entire day. Special clubs and the WBDQ news crew begin at 7:45 and students may enter the building at this time. Regular classroom work begins at 7:55. The tardy bell rings at 8:10. A parent or guardian must sign in late students. 3 tardies without a doctor's note will become 1 day of absence.
Dismissal is 2:45 for bus riders and 2:55 for carpool. If you absolutely must receive your child early on a particular day, please come before 2:30 p.m. to avoid parking problems and transportation mishaps. We will not call students from their classrooms after 2:30 p.m.
