I am very excited to work with you and your child this new school year!
Title 1 is a federally funded program which addresses both remediation of skills and acceleration of skill acquisition. This program is designed to provide learning activities/opportunities for students needing extra assistance to be successful in the classroom. Title One teachers pull students from the classroom for small group instruction as well as going into the classroom in the upper grades to assist students.

Title 1 offers opportunities for parents also:

Parents are encouraged to visit the Title One classrooms to learn strategies to help their child succeed.

Brinson Elementary School has a Parent Resource Center located in Room 226. Parents may check out items including manipulatives, books, tapes, educational games and supplemental worksheets to work with their child.

First Grade Title One Services
Title One services will be provided to targeted students in the first grade for 30 minutes per day, five days per week.

Our main goal in First Grade Title One is to improve phonics and decoding skills. We will approach phonics instruction in a sequential manner. Every class will include a lesson on a target sound for the week, review of sight words, review of spelling words, reading a story that includes words with the target sound and practice on the computer for the target sound.

Give your child lots of opportunities to read aloud. Inspire your young reader to practice every day! The tips below offer some fun ways you can help your child become a happy and confident reader. Try a new tip each week. See what works best for your child.


Don't leave home without it
Bring along a book or magazine any time your child has to wait, such as at a doctor's office. Always try to fit in reading!

Once is not enough
Encourage your child to re-read favorite books and poems. Re-reading helps kids read more quickly and accurately.

Dig deeper into the story
Ask your child questions about the story you've just read. Say something like, "Why do you think Clifford did that?"

Take control of the television
It's difficult for reading to compete with TV and video games. Encourage reading as a free-time activity.

Be patient
When your child is trying to sound out an unfamiliar word, give him or her time to do so. Remind to child to look closely at the first letter or letters of the word.

Pick books that are at the right level
Help your child pick books that are not too difficult. The aim is to give your child lots of successful reading experiences.

Play word games
Have your child sound out the word as you change it from mat to fat to sat; from sat to sag to sap; and from sap to sip.

I read to you, you read to me
Take turns reading aloud at bedtime. Kids enjoy this special time with their parents.

Gently correct your young reader
When your child makes a mistake, gently point out the letters he or she overlooked or read incorrectly. Many beginning readers will guess wildly at a word based on its first letter.

Talk, talk, talk!
Talk with your child every day about school and things going on around the house. Sprinkle some interesting words into the conversation, and build on words you've talked about in the past.

Write, write, write!
Ask your child to help you write out the grocery list, a thank you note to Grandma, or to keep a journal of special things that happen at home. When writing, encourage your child to use the letter and sound patterns he is learning at school.

Second Grade Title One Services
Title One services will be provided to targeted students in the second grade for 30 minutes per day, five days per week.

Second Grade Title One Services are designed to increase reading fluency. Reading fluency is the ability to read a passage accurately and smoothly. Fluency is an integral part of comprehending text. A non-fluent reader will read very slowly – word by word. Reading in this manner makes it extremely difficult to understand what is being read. A fluent reader can concentrate on content rather than decoding.

What kids can do to help themselves:
* Track the words with your finger as a parent or teacher reads a passage
aloud. Then you read it.

* Have a parent or teacher read aloud to you. Then, match your voice to theirs.

* Read your favorite books and poems over and over again.

* Practice getting smoother and reading with expression.


What parents can do to help at home:
Support and encourage your child. Realize that he or she is likely
frustrated by reading.

Check with your child's teachers to find out their assessment of your
child's word decoding skills. If your child can decode words well, help him or her build speed and accuracy by:

* Reading aloud and having your child match his voice to yours

* Having your child practice reading the same list of words, phrase,
or short passages several times

* Reminding your child to pause between sentences and phrases

* Read aloud to your child to provide an example of how fluent
reading sounds.

* Give your child books with predictable vocabulary and clear
rhythmic patterns so the child can "hear" the sound of fluent
reading as he or she reads the book aloud.

* Use books on tapes; have the child follow along in the print copy.
